I've long thought that the films from the 40s featured a large number of truly sexy smoking actresses that used their smoking in a sometimes strong, sometimes demure fashion to suit their character's personalities. These women would use their smoking as a tool and could make men melt at the sight of them smoking or enhance their strength of the point they were making, and always, always oozing sensuality while they smoked.
